Analgesic is a drug that is used for relieving pain and inflammation in the body. Analgesic drugs are commonly called as "pain killers". Analgesics are classified into different types based on the mechanism of action. This short article will brief about the analgesics and their classification along with their effects.
Analgesics are classified into four types, such as:
- Opioids - These types of analgesics act on pain receptors of central nervous system; they also induce sedation.
- Alpha - 2 agonists - These types of analgesics show deep sedative effect. They are also used as good muscle relaxants.
- NSAID - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - These types of drugs are used as analgesics, antipyretics and also as anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Local analgesia - This type of analgesia is used at the time of surgery as an effective desensitizer.
The frequently used analgesics are Aspirin, Codeine, Ibuprofen and Paracetamol.
Effects of Analgesics
Any drug that is used for a long term or as an overdose will cause side effects. Analgesics also have the same effects, which are as follows:
